Tabitha unveils Wafcon trophy

Scorchers captain Tabitha Chawinga was yesterday among Africa’s top women’s football players that unveiled the 2025 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (Wafcon) trophy in Rabat, Morocco.

The forward, who plays for French giants Olympic Lyon Women, said although Malawi is not at the finals, she was proud to be part of the historic event.

“It’s truly an honour and privilege to be part of Wafcon even when my country isn’t participating. Today, I had the incredible opportunity to unveil the trophy and the adrenaline rush was unforgettable!

“Let me thank CAF [the Confederation of African Football] for including me in this special moment. I wish all the qualifying teams the very best. Let the games begin! African women’s football is on the rise. May the resilience of African girl-child light up football pitches in Africa and beyond.”

Meanwhile, Espn has stated that Tabitha and her younger sister Temwa’s absence at the continental finals is a big blow because the duo is Africa’s biggest women’s football stars.

Read the report: “Malawi failed to field a team for the qualifiers due to financial constraints at the Football Association of Malawi [FAM].

“Temwa has become one of the hottest prospects in the world, signing for the Kansas City Current [in the United States of America] and becoming the first NWSL [National Women’s Super League] player to score 20 goals in a season in her debut campaign last year.

“Her elder sister, Tabitha, plays for Lyon, one of the most successful European women’s teams.”

Malawi is currently in the running to qualify for Wafcon 2026 and is scheduled to face Angola in a two-legged second round tie in October.

The winner will advance to the tournament in Morocco.

“This time, however, fans will have to do without two of the biggest stars in Africa,” Espn stated.

The delayed 2024 Wafcon kicks off today and will conclude on July 26.
